First secretary of state for the Confederacy, Toombs was a bitter rival of Jefferson Davis’s, and ran against him in the presidential election; he was later wounded at the Battle of Antietam. ALS signed “R. Toombs,” two pages, lightly-lined, 7.75 x 9.75, July 12, 1856. Letter to James Stone, thanking him for a donation. In part: “Knowing the munificence with which Boston provides for her own poor & unfortunate, I thought the destitute foreigner who landed on your shores might possibly stand most in need of the small aid.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds (one vertical fold passing through a single letter of the signature).
