Notorious criminal (1890–1963) who, while imprisoned, became a self-educated authority on birds and earned the nickname ‘The Birdman of Alcatraz.’ Two letters: first, an ALS to Fred E. Daw, his longtime friend and president of the Chicago Bird Club, one page, lightly-lined both sides, 8 x 10.25, signed “Bob, Robert Stroud, #594,” December 21, 1958. The second, a TLS, one page, lightly-lined, 8 x 10.25, signed “Robert Stroud,” October 17, 1942. Letter to his sister Mamie E. Stroud, in part: “I have not had a letter from Mark for three weeks and I am beginning to think that his letters must have gone astray or something like that. I know that [he] got my last letter, because in it he asked me about a bird that a mutial [sic] friend of ours there wanted to purches [sic] and last Monday I got the money for the bird, but still no letter from either him or the woman. I have the birds all ready to ship, but am holding them up until I hear from one of them, so that I know that they will be ready to receive them.” In overall fine condition, with intersecting folds (one vertical fold passing through a single letter of each signature), some small tears and chips, and notations in an unknown hand.
