Imprisoned for murder at the age of 18, Robert Stroud (1890–1963) spent more than 54 years in jail (47 in isolation), where he became a self-educated authority on birds and bird diseases and author of an important reference, Stroud’s Digest of the Diseases of Birds, published in 1942. ALS signed “Bob, Robert Stroud, #594,” one page, lightly-lined both sides, 8 x 10.25, February 17, 1957. Letter to his sister Mamie. In part: “That deal is not closed yet, I do not know what it was, but there was something in Stan’s wording of the contract that Marc did not like, but I think that it will all be settled this week, as there is only one point I would make an issue of and I have agreed to that. Once this thing is closed and the picture option taken up, you will be hearing a lot about me, and I am pretty sure that many of our plans will work, and that everyone will make money.” Stroud’s full signature appears again in the return address area of the letter. In very good condition, with intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, and uniform toning.
