Robert Stroud Signed Letter w/ Bird Content
Imprisoned for murder at age 18, Stroud (known as "The Birdman of Alcatraz") spent over 54 years in jail (47 of them in isolation) where he became a self-educated authority on canaries and bird diseases publishing "Stroud's Digest of the Diseases of Birds" in 1942. Here is a typed letter signed "Robert Stroud," three pages, 8 x 10.5, June 30, 1939. A great letter with extensive bird content, Stroud writes in part, "The only condition I know that could cause the symptom described is rickets...The blood and the skin turn dark and leathery...rickets comes from lack of sufficient vitamin D or direct sunlight. The rickety old birds I have seen went bald on the head and necks." Light wear and paper loss at the upper left corner from staple removal; light overall toning, otherwise in fine condition.
