British engineer (1803–1859) who assisted his father, the engineer George Stephenson, with a number of railway-related enterprises. He later served as Chief Engineer of London's first railway, in that capacity constructing a number of bridges and tunnels, and served in Parliament. ALS signed “Rob. Stephenson,” one page both sides, 7.5 x 9.25, December 11, 1857. Handwritten letter concerning the history of the locomotive, in part: "My recollection does not serve me sufficiently as to dates respecting the introduction of 6 wheels to the Locomotive Engine…I feel almost quite sure that the Engine wheels were never chilled, but that…coupled wheels were in use many years before 1839." In fine condition, with intersecting folds and a rusty circular paperclip impression to the top.
