Robert St. Brice (1898-1973)was one of the very few first generation Haitian painters who was totally unique. His brand of voodoo expressionism straight from his psyche is totally unique and powerful. So much so he was the inspiration or father of the Saint Soleil genre that is in such demand today, but still no one painted like St. Brice. This painting titled "Peacock" is signed on the right lower with artists name. It is oil on masonite. It is 23 1/2 by 35 1/2 inches. It was acquired by the present owners from Georges S. Nader (The elder) in about 1990. It was part of his private collection. On the back it says: Collection of Georges S. Nader-Southby's. Ref. Auction sale #5189, May 30, 1984, Lot # 407. 24" X 36". PR-HAO. This is one of St. Brice's best and has the provenance to match. I have given two resolutions of this painting because neither quite does it justice. The darker one is closest, but the lighter one demonstrates the complexity of the matrix of spirit works going on.
