In the words of Crookshank and Glin, Scanlan was “a highly competent and very lively artist”, known for his large output of comic drawings, many of which were later engraved and published in a volume titled Barney Bryan’s Sketchbooks. Other works to be engraved included his well-known Donnybrook to Dublin and Drogheda to Dundalk car driving scenes. See also Strickland, Vol.II, pp. 324-325.
