LS signed “Warwicke,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 7.25 x 11.5, March 11, 1658. Letter to a "Lord," evidently Henry Cromwell, Lord Deputy of Ireland and son of Oliver Cromwell, announcing the death of his grandson. In part: "I must needs say I have loste a deare & comfortable Relation, one in whom I had much determined my affections, & lodged my hopes, wch. are now rebuked & withered by a hasty and Early Death; But my propertie in him, was inferior to his who hath taken him; and I must rest my hearte in his proceedings; making it my care & suite, that those Evills wch cannot bee averted, may bee sanctifyed." Notations on the reverse denote Henry Cromwell was the recipient. In fine condition, with light foxing and toning. The 2nd Earl of Warwick's grandson, also named Robert, married Frances Cromwell, daughter of the Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell, in 1657, but died of consumption within three months of the marriage on February 16, 1658.
