British home secretary (1788–1850) in the 1820s who instituted the police force, whose members were nicknamed ‘bobbies’ and ‘peelers’ after him; he later became Prime Minister. ALS, two pages, 4.5 x 7, no date but circa 1842. Response to a reverend regarding the financing of church construction. In part: “I know not whether it would be consistent with their regulations to advance money…The advances to aid of the construction of workhouses were made under the distinct authority of an act of Parliament.” Peel penned the letter on the reverse of the initial request sent to him, regarding the “necessary repairs of the Tower of Nottingham Church.” Pages taped together at edges, otherwise fine condition.
