Robert Ottokar Lindneux (1871 - 1970)

Robert Ottokar Lindneux was born in New York City in 1871. Demonstrating a talent for art at a young age, he traveled to Europe and studied under a number of notable 550. In 1892 Lindneux saw Buffalo Bill Cody’s Wild West in Paris, which sparked his passion for the American West. He returned to the United States in 1893 with a plan to head west to paint. He traveled extensively, was made an honorary chief by the Oglala Sioux, and resided briefly with the Cheyenne and the Crow in Montana. Near the turn of the century, he befriended Charles Russell and the pair shared Russell's studio at Great Falls for several years. In 1909, Lindneux opened a studio in Denver where he settled permanently until his death in 1970.
