Private typed memo, signed in type, “Robert S. McNamara,” one page, 8 x 10.5, Secretary of Defense letterhead, August 3, 1964, and headed at the top, “Eyes Only, Memorandum For The Record.” Memo reads, in part: “On Friday the President stated he believed that Jackie had been pressuring Bobby to run for the Vice Presidency. The President had been told by one or more individuals that Jackie had repeatedly stated to Bobby he must run for the Vice Presidency and that it was her insistence, rather than any desire of his own, that was moving him toward that objective. The President further said that he felt, and had been told, that Jackie was very bitter toward him. I replied that I was certain he was wrong on both counts; that I had had frequent conversations with her.”; and a hand-addressed and free franked mailing envelope, 5.25 x 3.75, filled out by Jacqueline Kennedy to “Mrs. Robert S. McNamara, 2412 Tracy place N.W., Washington, D. C.,” and franked along the top, “Jacqueline Kennedy.” In fine condition, with some light wrinkles to memo. Just days before issuing this memo, Johnson announced that he would not recommend as a running mate any member of his cabinet. A highly insightful and revealing offering as McNamara attempts to keep the peace between the Kennedys and Johnson.
