This portrait by Robert Lebeck was shot in 1961 and shows the American actress Jayne Mansfield at the wine tasting in a hotel during the Berlin film festival. The beautiful blonde caused quite a stir at the Berlinale when her dress burst open in front of a crowd of photographers. Robert Lebeck is one of the great German documentary photographer who portrayed innumerable personalities from the realm of politics and culture such as Konrad Adenauer, Alfred Hitchcock, Joseph Beuys, Elvis Presley and beautiful women like Jackie Kennedy or Romy Schneider.



The photograph is in very good condition with only slight edge wear which does not affect the image. The sheet is mounted under a mat with photo mounting corners. The print is signed in black ink lower right ‘Robert Lebeck’ and dated and inscribed lower left ‘Jayne Mansfield. Berlin 1961’. The verso bears the photographer's stamp and is inscribed as well as signed. The sheet size is 40.7 x 30.4 cm. The mat measures 50 x 40 cm.

Robert Lebeck (b. 1929)

Born in Berlin in 1929, Robert Lebeck studied in Zurich and New and is self-educated in the field of photography. From 1952 onwards he worked as a photojournalist for various newspapers and magazines and for a year he was chief editor at GEO magazine. At a later stage he worked for the German magazine ‘Stern’ once again. Lebeck gained international fame in 1960 with the series of photographs ‘Africa in the Year Zero’, documenting the independence of the Congo. The photographer is also a major collector of 19th century photographs, part of which are located at the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, Germany. In 2001 Robert Lebeck returned to Berlin where he still lives and works today.
