Scottish naturalist and mineralogist (1774–1854) remembered as a teacher of Charles Darwin and for building Great Britain's second-largest collection of zoological and geological specimens for the Museum of Edinburgh University. ALS signed “Rob't Jameson,” one page both sides, 7 x 8.75, December 31, 1845. Handwritten letter to American geologist Parker Cleaveland at Bowdoin College, discussing geological classifications systems. In part: "I am truly delighted to find you are about to publish a new edition of your…Mineralogy…I have published no separate work on minerals since the volume of 1837. In the Edinburgh New Phil. Journal Vol. XXXI for 1841, I published a tabular view of an arrangement I have used in my Lectures for some years…I still continue to find this arrangement on the whole more acceptable to mineralogical students than the unaltered system of my late dear friend Mohs—Haidinger has lately published a work, a Handbook of Mineralogy in two parts—the system is that of Mohs slightly altered." He goes on to request "good specimens of American minerals such as can be exhibited in a classroom." Addressed on the integral leaf in Jameson's hand. In fine condition, with slightly irregular light toning.
