Rare signed book: My Eskimo Friends, 'Nanook of the North.' First edition. NY: Doubleday, Page & Company, 1924. Hardcover with green cloth-covered boards (issued without dust jacket) and several handsome photogravure plates, 7.25 x 10.25, 170 pages. Signed and inscribed on the half-title page in black ink, "To Grace Goldberg, with love & good wishes, Robert J. Flaherty, New York, July 3rd 1925." In very good to fine condition, with full separation to the first free end page, wear/cracking to inner hinge, and a small stain to the bottom of the spine. Released in 1922, Nanook of the North was the first commercially successful feature-length documentary, and was one of the first twenty-five films chosen by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Archives. As such, its creator, Robert Flaherty, an explorer and mineralogist turned filmmaker, occupies a special place among the documentary pantheon. Signed first edition copies of Nanook are scarce and seldom encountered.
