Confederate brigadier general who served as the Chief of Staff for the Army of Northern Virginia under Robert E. Lee (1815–1879). Civil War–dated LS signed “R. H. Chilton,” one page, 7.75 x 10, Head Quarters, Department Northern Virginia letterhead, October 3, 1863. Letter containing "Special Order No. 249," in part: "The following named men are during their unfitness for field service detailed for hospital guard or other light duty…Private Sidney A. Brass, Co. 'J,' 3d Ala. Regt." Signed at the conclusion by Chilton as assistant adjutant general; he would be confirmed as brigadier general on February 16, 1864. Endorsed on the reverse by Medical Director R. S. Peebles, ordering Private Brass to report to Surgeon Rice, in charge of the general hospital at Howard's Grove. In very good to fine condition, with light creasing, intersecting folds, and all writing a bit light. Rare and desirable war-dated Southern letterhead.
