ALS, one page both sides, 6.5 x 8, 1927. Letter to Sir Henry Newbolt, in part: "Many thanks for your letter, and for the return of the proofs. Your second choice pleases me much better. You will have noticed a lacuna in Alice in the proofs. It should read: why must I assume That what I'd see them must needs correspond With what I see now? And the rooms beyond I am gratified by your interest in my other work. Yes, we are in agreement about ballad authorship. About the poem and its audience. I am glad you limit it to a mental climate: I would reduce it still further and make the only original audience of the poem, the poem itself. In a secondary sense it can have an audience accidentally small or large, which still claims the divine right of the audience as opposed to that of the poem: I would not have such difficulty in maintaining myself in society. I refer merely of course to economic pressure; my literary position I do not take seriously. We should be glad to see you if & when you come over the hill from Elsfield. No more Wiltshire for us for three years: my father in law is letting us his house." In fine condition.
