LS signed “R. E. Peary, U.S.N,” three pages, 8 x 10, January 29, 1903. In part: “Accept my best thanks for your characteristic editorial for the ‘S.W.’ It consoles me for the fact that the Associated Press fell down on the news…As to the Grigler incident if it is not a development of your diplomacy, it may be the result of my article in McClures & the unexpected send off which the editor gave me.” Light wrinkling, corner creasing, and a paper clip impression at the upper left corner of each page, otherwise fine condition.
Peary’s 1898-1902 Arctic expedition represented his first serious effort to reach the North Pole. Although the journey was marked with some controversy, including a claim that he had sighted what is now known as Axel Heiberg Island prior to Norwegian explorer Otto Sverdrup's expedition (a claim now rejected), his work was highly regarded for its authentic achievements. During the mission, Peary discovered Cape Jesup at the north tip of Greenland, and at the time traveled the farthest north in the Western Hemisphere. Even the loss of eight toes, amputated in 1899, could not diminish his quest. It appears that Peary was the focus of some controversy upon his return from that expedition...a reality that would continue even after reaching the geographic North Pole, and continue more than a century later.
