Peary (1856-1920), Partial Autograph Letter (unsigned),</B></I> one page, 8" x 10.5", Payer Harbor, [Ellesmere Island], August 29, 1901 to fellow Arctic explorer and anthropologist Albert Operti. While on one of his pre-Polar Arctic expeditions, Peary writes to Operti (who accompanied him to Greenland in 1897) in part; "<I>I was tramping [sic] along the ice foot near Hayes Pt. on my return from [Fort] Conger when suddenly a team of howling dogs appeared upon the scene dragging a sledge on which as a long-haired, shouting Eskimo (Karadahsu, whom you may remember). He handed me my mail bag, & my first news for two years. Your letter I read that night in a snow igloo at Cape Louis Napoleon. Don't 'bust' just yet. You have a year's extension of time for it. Besides I want to see you again...</B></I>" Mounted to a larger sheet, on the verso of which has been affixed a second <B>Robert E. Peary Autograph Letter Signed,</B></I> <I>Hastily Peary,</B></I> one page, 6" x 9.25", no place given, June 17, 1904 in pencil to Operti concerning a photograph. In part: <I>Can you strengthen & more clearly define the features in this photo & also complete the hood as indicated by the pencil lines, all in a way that a good photo reproduction can be made...</B></I>" Peary would begin his final expedition to the North Pole in 1908 reaching the spot deemed magnetic North at 0-degrees on April 7, 1909.
