Original 2.5 x 4 carte-de-visite portrait of young Lee by Boude & Miley Stonewall Gallery in Lexington, Virginia, and so stamped on the reverse, signed in black ink in the lower border, “R. E. Lee.” In fine condition, with scattered toning and soiling and the image slightly pale.

This rare early image of Lee as a young officer was likely captured around 1846, during or shortly after the Mexican–American War. According to Roy Meredith’s book, The Face of Robert E. Lee, this portrait was derived from a long-lost daguerreotype and shows the dark-haired Lee in the uniform of a Captain of Engineers. While war-dated and post-war images of the Confederate commander are not uncommon, early signed images are extremely scarce.
