Renowned General in Chief of the Confederate armies, perhaps the most universally revered of American soldiers. Extremely rare letter, entirely in Lee’s hand on one sheet of lined paper, approx. 8” x 9”, Lexington, VA. April 16, 1867. The letter is written to Reverend John W. Brown thanking him for a donation for Southern Relief. In full: “I have rec’d your letter of the 11th Inst enclosing your draft for Eighty dollars for the relief of the suffering people of the South. In its application I will endeavor to select objects worthy of the donation: I feel assured that the blessing of God will accompany a gift dictated by benevolent motives and hallowed by pious memories. I sympathize with you deeply in the death of your noble brother & trust he has rec-d the reward of duty faithfully performed. With great respect, your oby servant.” Boldly signed “R.E. Lee” at the conclusion. The letter has been nicely matted and framed in suede with a short biographical plaque and a plaque bearing the text of the letter to an overall size of 21” x 15”. The letter was written during the period when Lee served as President of Washington College at Lexington, now named Washington and Lee University.
