This single page document is the original order from the "Headquarters Army Northern, Va./ August 13, 1863". "General Orders, No. 83". The date of issue is significant; roughly five weeks after the Battle of Gettysburg. General Lee writes this order in response from the President of the Confederate States to make August 21st a day of fasting and prayer. Proclaiming that as soldiers "we have sinned against Almighty God". And that "God is our only refuge and our strength. Let us humble ourselves before Him. Let us confess our many sins, and beseech Him to give us a higher courage. . . ". The document is on light blue paper at 4.875 in. X 8.25 in. Signed in block print "R.E. Lee, General" lower right. There is foxing at two folds, professionally stabilized. There were may copies to be printed for the troops that were hastily printed and cut indicated by the un-square right edge. A steel cut lithograph depicts Confederate Officers by H. Wright Smith. A lithograph print of a young engineer Robert E. Lee passing by lantern in a lava bed during the Mexican-American War to scout a path for battle (at 6.25 in. X 9in. Please see photos for details.
