Incredible assortment of items related to Confederate General Robert E. Lee, beautifully framed. Lot includes: (1) six strands of Lee's hair, authenticated by Charles Hamilton (certification included), cut by Lee from his head on 19 April 1869 and presented to Louise R. Thome. (2) Signature “R.E. Lee” on a 2.5” x 2” slip of paper. (3) Original manuscript copy of Lee’s “General Orders No. 9” [Appomattox Court House, Virginia, 10 April 1865], signed by 30 Confederate soldiers of the 2nd Engineering Regiment, Co. G, present at the surrender. This is one of several copies of General Orders No. 9, which were distributed to Corps commanders and other members of the army staff on the day of the surrender, and which are now considered the cornerstone of any Civil War collection. The order reads in part, ''…After four years of arduous service marked by unsurpassed courage and fortitude the Army of Northern Virginia has been compelled to yield to overwhelming numbers and resources. I need not tell the brave survivors of so many hard fought battles, who have remained steadfast to the last, that I have consented to this result from no distrust of them…'' Document measures 16” x 12.5” written in an unknown hand. Some show-through at the corners from tape on verso. (4) Partly printed parole document, dated 10 April 1865 at Appomattox Court House. Document paroles John E. Roller, a member of the same 2nd Engineering Regiment, with ''permission to go to his home, and there remained undisturbed.” Single-page document measures 7.75” x 3”. Show-through at the corners from mounting stains on verso. Also, expertly restored to darken the ink which has faded over time. Overall, a truly amazing collection framed to an size of 36.5” x 27.5”.
