Robert E. Howard The Dark Man and Others
Robert E. Howard The Dark Man and Others. (Sauk City, Wisconsin: Arkham House, 1963), first edition, black cloth with gilt lettering on the spine, 12mo (5.25" x 7.5"), dust jacket (in protective Mylar). Only 2000 copies printed. Frank Utpatel cover. Sadly, Robert E. Howard took his own life on June 11, 1936, after learning his mother would never emerge from a tuberculosis-induced coma. The prolific author was only 30 years old, leaving a world to wonder what other marvelous literary output may have come from the big, brash Texan most famous for Conan the Cimmerian. This Arkham House edition collects some of Howard's more esoteric stories, including a lost race story, two Lovecraftian pieces, two regional Texas tales, and "Pigeons from Hell," a haunted plantation yarn featuring recurring Howard character Kirby Buckner. This copy is very good, with some edge and spine wear and one bumped corner on the cover. Pages are crisp and clean. Dust jacket is very good, with minor wear to the edges. Vibrant color on the cover. Scarce in this condition.
