Original unsigned pencil and ink sketches on both sides of a 5.25 x 8 off-white page, most likely removed from a sketch book. First page is numbered “101” by Crumb who has titled the page “Art.” Crumb then writes “Monochromatic different shades on one color large areas should be dull, small areas bright.” He writes and boxes the title of the trilogy “All and Everything by G. Gurdjieff,” ten books categorized into three series. Most of the page is a three-quarter length portrait of a woman drawn by Crumb. Reverse is numbered “102” by Crumb, and shows drawings of ten figures, mostly human. One at the top left, arguably, is a prototype for his iconic character, Fritz the Cat. An older man next to the cat is identified as “Soames in 1920.” A rear view of a woman seated in a chair is captioned “Christine Shulties.” A head resembling the devil, in red and black with green eyes, and two bird-like figures, one wearing a top hat, are each in color. A house drawn in the upper right is captioned “Governor’s Avenue, accross [sic] from the firehouse. A big old ‘American Gothic’ style house (used to be an illegal barroom. (56).” Expected scattered light soiling, show-through from color sketches on reverse, and a bit of mild toning, otherwise fine condition. Visually striking images from the founder of the underground comix movement.
