Robert Burns Autograph Letter Signed "Robt. Burns." Two pages, 7.5" x 8.65", Edinburgh, Scotland, nd. The letter is written to a Mr. James Candlish in Glasgow; it reads in part, "…At present I have time for nothing. Dissipation and business engross every moment. I am engaged in assisting an honest Scots enthusiast, a friend of mine, who is an Engraver, and has taken it into head to publish a collection of all our songs set to music…Pompey's Ghost, words and music, I beg from you immediately, to go into this second number; the first is already published…" The book mentioned here is James Johnson's The Scots musical museum. It was published in two volumes and many of Burns' contributions are present therein. Robert Burns is regarded by many as the national poet of Scotland, and was one of the pioneers of the Romantic Movement. His poem "Auld Lang Syne" is sung at nearly every New Year's celebration.
Accompanying this letter are the original envelope it was delivered in from Walter R. Benjamin Autographs, a letter from Charles Sessler Book Sellers detailing some of the provenance, as well as a typed transcription. The letter itself is in very good condition; the usual folds are present; some dark staining present on the front page; smudging of the ink is evident in several places; the integral address leaf has been removed and replaced by a new sheet of paper which was reapplied to the first page by silking; the original text on the address leaf has been cut and laid down onto the new sheet. The job was well done and very clean, however, it must be noted for accuracy of condition. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
