Robert Browning Pair of Autograph Letters Signed. Letter 1: One page, 4.5" x 7", personal letterhead, np, "Black Monday", December 18 1865. Both letters in this lot were written to a Mrs. Forester, the content of this particular letter is routine. <r Letter 2: Two pages, 4.5" x 7", personal letterhead, np, May 24, 1866. This letter reads in part, "…Now I am going to confide an awful secret to you- I am sure you will understand my feeling in it. The fact is, I am frightened to death by the thoughts of our dear Lord & Master suddenly inquiring into the matter- next time we meet- for he told me 'he had left it to you!' -I was really on hot coals last Sunday week- for fear he should say anything about it 0 so, I resolve to relieve my mind and enclose you 'The little bill' - Don't you understand my motive? I am sure you do." Both of these letters are whimsical and provide a wonderful insight into the personal side of this great English poet and playwright. <r The letters are both in very fine condition; usual folds are present; slight mounting traces on the verso of the of the 1866 letter. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
