<B>Robert Barr Postmaster Appointment Signed</B></I> "<I>R Barr</B></I>" as Postmaster General of Texas, one page, 8.5" x 10.75". Houston, April 12, 1839. Partly printed, completed in manuscript. Appointment of Thomas Wm. (Peg Leg) Ward as "<I>Post Master at the City of Houston</B></I>." Robert Barr was appointed as the first Postmaster General of Texas on December 22, 1836 by Pres. Sam Houston and was reappointed by Pres. Mirabeau B. Lamar in 1838. He died in office on October 11, 1839. <B>Thomas William (Peg Leg) Ward</B></I> had fought at the siege of Bexar in December 1835. During the battle, at the head of an artillery company, Capt. Ward lost his leg to a cannonball. He returned to New Orleans to be fitted with a peg leg. Ward later served as Mayor of Austin (1840-1841, 1853, 1865) and Commissioner of the General Land Office of Texas from 1841-1848. Light folds.
