In Citizen Artist, Carty notes Ballagh’s strong connection with his mentor Micheal Farrell, a Meath artist, who was greatly influenced by the illuminated manuscript of The Book of Kells. Ballagh's stance on art mirrored Farrell who stated, "Art is above politics but not above humanity" (Carty, p.94), thus Ballagh's technique and approach to politicised subjects rejected abstract representation in favour of a focused statement and a clean execution. The original oil and acrylic on canvas on which these watercolours are based can be found in the collection of The House of Humour and Satire, Gabrovo, Bulgaria.
