Union general (1805–1871) dubbed the ‘Hero of Fort Sumter’ for refusing Confederate demands to surrender the fort and enduring two days of bombardment before finally submitting. War-dated ALS, one page, lightly-lined both sides, 4.75 x 7, July 11, 1861. Letter to Edward Thomas in Washington. In part: “I shall, in compliance with your request, inclose the autograph, written as you suggested. Hoping that God will so control and direct those who are in authority that Peace and Harmony and confidence may be restored to our beloved Union.” Intersecting folds, old catalog description affixed to top border, and a vertical mounting strip along left edge, otherwise fine condition. Inspirational words from one of the Civil War’s first national heroes.
