Ringling Bros.- Barnum & Bailey Combined Shows
Ringling Bros.- Barnum & Bailey Combined Shows (DE) Specimen. Common. Multi-colored characters. Blue frame. Circus animals, clowns, performers, circus wagons. SPECIMEN printed in red, green tents and elephants underprinted in the central portion. When Judge Roy Hofheintz and a group of Texas businessmen bought the circus they wanted the new stock certificates to be representative of their new acquisition. The salespeople at American Banknote informed Hofheintz that to engrave a certificate with all of that circus art would take months, and be prohibitively expensive. One of senior sales reps suggested that the border be engraved by ABN, and the intricate circus art be supplied by Ringling Brothers and lithographed by ABN. The resulting certificates turned out to be magnificent. They were so well liked that when Ringling Brothers was taken over by Mattell, and the stock holders were asked to return the Ringling Brothers certificates, many of the stockholders refused to do so. Matell finally agreed to cancel the Ringling Brothers certificates neatly, and return them to the original buyers. The blue Ringlings are the rarest variety. They were used for large denomination transactions. ABN. EF+.
