To Ernst Wilhelm Fritzsch, publisher of his collected works. In full, “<I>It seems, my dear Herr Fritzsch, that you are waiting until I remind you that I only have the 2 vellum compulsory copies, before you send the ninth volume? Certainly, I must still thank you very much for its punctual production, and in general for the whole edition, which indeed does you honor in every respect; still, I cannot understand why, just at the last volume, I finally appear to have been almost completely forgotten. I hope that - in general - I shall soon hear from you.</B></I>” The Battle of Sedan was fought on September 1, 1870 in the Franco-Prussian War, resulting in the capture of Emperor Napoleon III, the fall of the second French empire, and the eventual creation of the victorious German Empire in 1871. <I>Gesammelte Schriften und Dichtungen,</B></I> Wagner's <I>Collected Writings,</B></I> were published by Fritzsch in ten volumes from 1871-1883, under Wagner's direct supervision. This letter was written by the German composer on the anniversary of the Battle of Seden, September 1st, most probably in the late 1870s.
