Union brigadier general who led at Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Dalton, and New Hope Church where he was severely wounded. Written to G.B. Patrick, son of Union General Marsena S. Patrick. A fine autobiographical letter describing his military career, including Civil War duty. In part: "<I>I think that Chickamauga was the bloodiest battle on our line, and was to the west what Gettysburgh was to the eastI hope our beloved country may be pared, in all time to come, from the demoralizing influences and heart sickening experiences of another long and bloody war</B></I>". In very fine condition; usual folds are present; light mounting traces on verso.
