American soldier and statesman (1753-1831) who was aide-de-camp to Benedict Arnold prior to the latter's defection to the British. Varick later served as Washington's private secretary, mayor of New York, and a New York state legislator. Partly-printed DS, signed “Rich'd Varick,” one page, 8.5 x 13.25, March 8, 1796. Mayor Varick grants Uriah Burdge, a grocer, a "Licence to keep an Inn or Tavern for retailing strong or spirituous Liquors in his Dwelling House," under the terms that he not "keep a disorderly Inn or Tavern, or suffer or permit any Cock-Fighting, Gaming, or Playing with Cards or Dice, or keep any Billiard-Table, or other Gaming-Table, or Shuffle-Board." Prominently signed at the conclusion by Varick as mayor of New York City. In fine condition, with light toning along the folds, and a few small professional repairs on the reverse.
