American soldier and statesman (1753–1831) who was aide-de-camp to Benedict Arnold prior to the latter’s defection to the British. Varick later served as Washington’s private secretary, mayor of New York, and a New York state legislator. Partly-printed DS, signed “Rich. Varick,” one page, 8 x 13, March 4, 1795. License approval for Cortland Van Beuren to keep an Inn or Tavern for retailing liquor. During that time, he will “not keep a disorderly Inn or Tavern…or permit any Cock-Fighting, Gaming or Playing with Cards or Dice, or keep any Billiard table.” Signed at the conclusion by Varick. In very good condition, with partial separations along horizontal folds, scattered light toning and edge wear, and some light show-through from docketing on reverse.
