In part, “<I>New York Mayors Court of the Term of Tuesday the second day of April…City and County of New York Daniel Strain is delivered to Bail on the taking of his Body to James Dobbin of the seventh ward of the City of New York…in a Plea of Trespass…</B></I>” Acknowledged and signed “<I>James Dobbin</B></I>” in Varick's presence. Mayor Varick has boldly signed at the bottom (5" long!). Aide-de-camp to General Benedict Arnold during the Revolutionary War, Richard Varick was examined by a court of inquiry after Arnold's defection and was completely exonerated. Irregularly cut at the left edge affecting the first letters of three lines. The blank lower corners have been diagonally cut away.
