In the note, Judge Peters relays information to a fellow attorney, William Rawle, Jr., from the Chancellor (William Rawle, Sr.). Peters writes, <I>I asked The Chancellor, what was meant by the decree or opinion in the case you mentioned. He replied - Mr. Rawle may either argue the case on the merits of the plea, or take issue on the pleas & go to tryal </B></I> <I>sic</B></I> . Fine.<BR><BR> Richard Peters, Jr. (1744-1828) was an American lawyer, jurist, and politician from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a delegate for Pennsylvania to the Continental Congress in 1782 and 1783. He was the judge of the United States district court for Pennsylvania (1815-1828).<BR><BR> William Rawle (1759-1836) studied law at Middle Temple, London in 1781, and returned to Philadelphia to open the Rawle Law Offices on September 15, 1783. He quickly took his place among Philadelphia's legal elite, managing a successful law practice and participating in the formation of the new republic. Rawle became the first chancellor of the newly-founded Philadelphia Bar Association in 1822, and remained in that position until his death.<BR><BR> William Rawle, Jr. (1788-1858) joined his father's practice in 1813.
