The letter reads, "<I>Pay James Tighman and Joseph Shippen Jur Esqrs the sum of fifty pounds to defray the Expences of their Journey to Fort Augusta and charge the same to the Account of the Honorable Proprietors...The above Journey is undertaken by the Governors order to look out a proper place for a Town to the County of Northumberland.</B></I>" Richard Penn the Younger (1736 - 1811) was the grandson of William Penn. Although sympathetic to the patriot cause and heavily vested in Pennsylvania, he re-patriated himself to England. Mounted by the left margin to collector's sheet, some pencil notations.
