English biologist and paleontologist (1804-1892) best known for interpreting fossils and coining the term 'dinosaur.' ALS signed “Rich'd Owen,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7.25, August 9, 1875. Handwritten letter to Mr. Roebuck, in full: "Lenormant is not a safe authority out of his own Egyptian-line. I have not read the book you quote: but I have considered the evidence which has been interpreted to prove the existence of mankind at the Miocene period. It does not support such conclusion. Under better circumstances I should feel bound to see the locality & specimen before coming to a decision. I know of no proof of man's existence in the pliocene deposits. In post-pliocene caves the evidence is conclusive &, now, not scanty. It carries the date of human existence far beyond historical time, and shows such early people to have been what we call savages; nomad hunters." In fine condition, with mounting remnants to reverse.
