TLS as president signed “RN,” one page, 6.75 x 8.75, White House letterhead, March 24, 1970. Letter to Virginia Congressman Richard Harding 'Dick' Poff, in full: "You know how pleased I am by the House action which resulted in a wide margin of victory on the District of Columbia Omnibus Crime Bill, but I did want to tell you that I am deeply grateful for your help. Without your fine work during the floor debate, this favorable action might not have been possible.” In fine condition, with staple holes to the upper left corner.

An attorney and a Republican, Poff was given strong consideration for the United States Supreme Court by President Nixon and was later appointed as a Justice of the Virginia Supreme Court. Before Nixon could formally nominate him for the U.S. Supreme Court, Poff withdrew. John Dean wrote that Poff actually made that decision based on concerns that he would thus be forced to reveal to his then-12-year-old son that he had been adopted. Poff's concern was that the child would be negatively affected by that kind of information if revealed before he was old enough to understand.
