Two typed letters signed by Richard Nixon dated 21 December 1983 and 5 January 1984, both on his personal stationery. 1983 letter reads in small part ''…the argument that developing a nuclear defense system is an escalation of the arms race is completely demolished…R.N.'' Then as a postscript: ''Best wishes for Christmas and the New Year. R.'' 1984 letter reads in part ''…Your column…was right on target…with regard to a defensive missile system…R.N.'' Both letters written to Joseph Kingsbury-Smith of Hearst Newspapers in Washington DC.
