He begn his studies at the piano, but soon decided to enroll at the Academy Fine Arts in Munich. His art career began in publishing, at a company associated with the Nazis, and he met some high-ranking members, including Hitler. But as soon as the Nazis came to power in 1933, he fled to Paris, where he was imprisoned. He eventually made it to New York, where he worked as an illustrator for Vogue, Fortune and Harper's Bazaar. The mechanistic cubist style, along with his own personal symbolism, inspired him to pursue painting, and he became known for his curious and comical characters. He taught at the Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, and at Yale University School of Art and Architecture. Today his art is widely collected, and can be found at many prestigious museums, including the Art Institute of Chicago, Museum of Modern Art, New York, Tate Gallery, London, and Walker Art Center, Minnesota. He has the distinction of being on the album cover of the Beatles "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band."
