Born and raised on a farm in Co. Wicklow, Kingston studied arts and engineering
at TCD, before moving to London where he worked as a teacher and designer. Upon
returning to Ireland in the 1950s he concentrated on painting, participating in
the Living Art exhibitions and holding his first solo exhibition at the Ritchie
Hendriks Gallery in 1958. He continued showing with Hendriks until the 1970s,
when he founded his own gallery, the Wellington Gallery. Since 1980 he has sat
on the board of the RHA; he also served on the NGI’s Board of Governors from
1982 to 1989. A Kingston survey show, including works from a span of fifty
years, was held at the RHA in March 2001.
