The Causeway Series, to which the present work belongs, took seed in 1982, when
Kingston first visited the famous Giant’s Causeway in Co. Antrim. There he was
struck by the contrast between the apparent order of the rock columns, and the
true chaos of the landscape. The changing nature of the light – also fascinated
the artist, providing a rich and everchanging catalogue of subjects. In the
catalogue to his exhibition entitled ‘Causeway’ at the RHA in 2001, Kingston
stated that he ‘’tried to make compositions out of chaos’’.
