In 1987, Richard Hamilton participated in a group of films, Painting with Light, made by Griffin Film Productions for the BBC, in which six artists experimented with the Quantel Paintbox. Richard Hamilton decided to use the Paintbox to 'collage' media images of Northern Ireland's Orange Parades, and in 1988 re-worked his painting The Orangeman at higher resolution on Quantel Graphic Paintbox, as a study for the 1988-89 work, The Subject. The material selected to collage included a black and white collage, a 35mm colour transparency, a still from a video tape that he had made from televised events in Northern Ireland, and a transparency of his painting The Citizen. In 1991, Hamilton wrote 'Apparently eccentric, the orange garb is well chosen. The hard bowler hat is not unlike a helmet and an umberella is clearly a substitute for the sword intended to clear Catholicism from Ireland. From beneath the orange frippery emerges a twenties-vintage City of London business man (late of the Brigade of Guards) - the conservative image to which Northern Irish politicians still aspire'.
