Behind the portrait of Derek Jarman is one of his last paintings, Ataxia (Aids is Fun), painted in June 1993. Ataxia is a motor dysfunction syndrome, causing loss of control of co-ordinated movement by destruction of the sensory nerves, manifesting itself in Jarman as an opportunistic infection brought on by the HIV virus. The catalogue to the exhibition for the series, Evil Queen: The Last Paintings, Whitworth Art Gallery, University of Manchester, 1995, commented on Jarman's working technique, 'Handfulls of paint were scooped from tims and literally flung onto the canvas or smeared on with both hands'.
