English explorer, translator, writer, soldier, and diplomat (1821-1890). He was known for his travels and explorations within Asia and Africa as well as his extraordinary knowledge of languages and cultures. According to one count, he spoke 29 European, Asian, and African languages. ALS signed “R. F. B.,” on a 3.25 x 5.5 postcard, September 1, postmarked Trieste. Letter to James Cotton. In full: “Do you want a stirring letter about origin etc. Of poverty in Egypt It must be dated from Alexandria and signed Victor. It will require some courage to insert it, but it will tell people about what they ignore.” In very good condition, with light corner creases, a horizontal crease, and scattered light toning and soiling.
