Richard F. Outcault - Buster Brown Partial Sunday Comic
Richard F. Outcault - Buster Brown Partial Sunday Comic Strip Original Art (Newspaper Feature Service Inc., 1923). Buster Brown was created by R. F. Outcault, who also originated The Yellow Kid (a feature often dubbed the "original American comic strip"). In 1906, Outcault (along with Buster) defected from his first home at the Herald over to the Hearst papers. The Herald then sued Hearst, and as had been the case a decade earlier, when Outcault brought The Yellow Kid to Hearst, the court ruled that the while the characters could go with the cartoonist, the name of the feature must remain with the first publisher. As a result, from then on, Outcault produced the strip without using Buster's name in the title, while the original strip continued on at the Herald under a succession of less talented artists. This Sunday was created using pasted-down drawings whose edges were then extended to the panel borders of the support board. The pasted-down art may have been recycled from an earlier strip. Some historians believe that the feature ended in 1921, but that Hearst may have continued to offer the strip (as reprints) until 1926. In any case, the pasted-on elements of this example are original art, not stats. This overall size of this Sunday measures approximately 23" x 17.5". Both Buster and Tige appear in this hilarious episode. Fair condition with moderate professional restoration.

Shipping: Large Flat (view shipping information)
