Richard E. Byrd 1928 TLS & Book Signed by Crew
Richard E. Byrd 1928 Typed Letter Signed and Skyward Book Signed by Crew. The first item offered is a TLS "R E Byrd", one page, 8.25" x 11", Byrd Antarctic Expedition letterhead, New York, July 31, 1928, to Dr. C. Ward Crampton, a letter of introduction to Dr. Haldor Barnes who was to be assistant Medical officer on the soon to be launched trip to the South Pole. Fine condition, mailing folds.

The second item is most interesting, Byrd's book Skyward (New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1928), first trade edition, xv, 359 pages, frontispiece and illustrations throughout, blue cloth with gilt titles on front and spine, 8vo (6" x 8.75"), no dust jacket. It has been signed, mostly on two facing pages in the front, by approximately 35 members of the Antarctic Expedition crew. Many have added their titles or duties beneath their names and the several dates show that this book was signed in the month or so before the group departed New York. An excellent collection of autographs. The book is in fair condition due to some rodent-nibbling on the spine and upper front board but the pages with the signatures are all intact. Also included are some notes and clippings, a Byrd Prize Letter Contest flyer, and the business card of G. W. Tennant, Chief Cook of the expedition.
