LS, one page both sides, 8.25 x 11.75, May 5, 1653. Letter reporting on the flight of the Dutch Fleet under Van Tromp, with 80 men-of-war and many merchant ships, and of their sailing in pursuit. Signed at the conclusion by Deane, "Ri. Deane," and Monck, "George Monck," both of whom served as general-at-sea during the First Anglo-Dutch War. In fine condition, with light staining, edge toning, and a rusty circular paperclip impression to the top. An English soldier and politician, Monck (1608–1670) was a key figure in the restoration of Charles II. Deane (1610–1653) supported the Parliamentarian cause in the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, and was one of the regicides of Charles I.
