ALS signed R. Cobden, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, February 27, 1854. Handwritten letter to "Lord Canning," complaining about postal regulations. In part: "According to the rule at the post office, members of parliament who are liable to change their Town residences, can never be sure of benefitting by the prepayment of their letters. Be kind enough to look at the hardship, nay absurdity, of their case. We arrive in London for the session, hand our address to the Vote Office, & to the Secretary of the General Post Office, but the latter refuses to deliver our letters to the new address, without additional change, although it may be half the distance of the old, because our country correspondents have not all been informed by circular of the change, & therefore continue to direct their letters to our last year's residence." In fine condition, with mounting remnants and a rusty paperclip impression to reverse.
